Located at 95 Old Hall Street in Liverpool city centre, The Echo Building was constructed in 1973-74. It is a brutalist style building that stands 73m (240ft) tall at 18 storeys, making it the joint tenth tallest building in the city. The upper half within the tower has previously been utilised as office space but has been vacant for a number of years. The lower levels are currently occupied with offices housing the Liverpool Echo newspaper printing rooms and distribution centre.
The tower affords fantastic panoramic views across the city and the renowned World Heritage waterfront.
The proposed refurbishment and adaption will provide a mixed use building including:
- Hotel within the existing 15 storey tower with 207 no. bedrooms, with associated communal areas including a restaurant/bar within an open living lounge, a conference area with associated café, and a rooftop sky bar available to the public
- Car Parking
- Retail space
- Office space
- Commercial Gym use
The works also include improvements to the façade of both the tower and podium levels, to provide direct access from Old Hall Street and activate the frontage along Brook Street.
The hotel will be operated by Melia Hotels, and is to be marketed as a business travel hotel, attempting to blur the lines between business and leisure.
Operators for the retail and commercial gym are yet to be identified.
Projex are providing a full range of services including PM/EA/QS and Principal Designer role. Works are due to start on site in May 2018 with an initial strip out and asbestos removal contract in the tower with the main development works commencing late September 2018 for a period of 12 months.
“Mac Group have worked closely with the Projex Principal Designer team throughout the 2nd Stage tender/design phase of the Liverpool Echo Hotel Development scheme. Their proactive, hands-on approach to coordinating health & safety on the clients’ site has enabled us to carry out essential survey work and building inspections in a timely manner. This assistance has been absolutely critical to us and is much appreciated.” – Stephen Parsons
