Projex client, The Chocolate Works Care Village, York has won a prestigious Pinders Healthcare Design Award for best new care village.
Offering residential, nursing and dementia care in an outstanding care environment, The Chocolate Works sets incredible new standards for elderly care. This was recognised when the Pinders judges visited recently to tour the building with Julie Smyth of Leeds-based architects, Norr, and Group CEO of Springfield Healthcare, Graeme Lee. The judges asked searching questions regarding the challenges which faced the team when restoring the iconic, listed building which once housed the headquarters of Terry’s of York.
Simpsons of York were the principal contractor and the final finish and attention to detail was greatly admired by the judges, particularly the work on wood panelling and cornicing.
The Chocolate Works Care Village is part of a multi-million pound expansion programme by Springfield Healthcare Group, one of Yorkshire’s oldest care providers, which is set to establish four further care villages providing wide ranging, compassionate care in the heart of communities.
Projex is advising or has advised on all five facilities as well as the company’s Seacroft Grange Care Village and Seacroft Green Care Centre.
The £10m restoration of the practically derelict Chocolate Works site was the brainchild of Springfield Group CEO, Graeme Lee. The vast central double height glazed atrium has been preserved and transformed into a unique “outside in” marketplace setting for the enjoyment of residents and visitors, complete with café, restaurant, spa, hairdresser, gym and even its own pub The Duke of York. A large roof terrace allows residents to enjoy uninterrupted views across York towards the Minster, adjoining race course and across the rest of the chocolate works site.
Graeme Lee, Group CEO said “Today was a fantastic day for Springfield Healthcare and also for the amazing team including architects Norr, builders Simpsons of York and project managers, Projex, who helped make the vision a reality. As a long established family business an award like this means a great deal as it is testament to the hard work, passion and commitment of such a lot of people.”
Springfield Healthcare is supported by the Business Growth Fund who are set to invest over £20M over the next three years. Springfield represented the first project in Yorkshire to attract finance from the Business Growth fund (BGF) and were also the BGF’s first healthcare project in the country.
