A groundbreaking care village has officially opened following a £7m transformation to create arguably one of the most innovative and inspirational care environments in the country.
Known as ‘The Chocolate Works’, it is built on the site of the former Terry’s Chocolate head office building in York and is part of a wider redevelopment of the entire listed former Terry’s factory site.
One of Yorkshire’s oldest care providers, the award-winning Springfield Healthcare Group, is behind the development, which is part of a multi-million pound expansion programme to establish five new care villages as well as a new care centre for working age adults.
Projex is the appointed project manager, cost consultant and principal designer (CDMC) on all six Springfield facilities and handed over the prestigious Chocolate Works development early last month.
Providing 82 care suites and 8 luxury apartments, the care village incorporates a covered two-storey market square with new mezzanine level as the centrepiece and social hub of the building, including trees, walkways with street lamps, shop fronts and outdoor style cafes and restaurants.
A single storey roof top extension and large roof terrace allows residents to enjoy uninterrupted views across York towards the Minster, adjoining race course and across the rest of the chocolate works site.
The company’s first care village, Seacroft Grange, was the first project in Yorkshire to attract finance from the Business Growth fund (BGF) and was also the BGF’s first healthcare project in the country.
It won best residential award in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Pro-Yorkshire awards 2014 – the first time in the event’s history that a care development has won this award in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
The adjacent Seacroft Green Care Centre was handed over earlier this year and is dedicated to nursing, respite and intermediate care for working age adults. It brings the total number of beds across this and Seacroft Grange to 171.
This allows Springfield to offer a significant range of short, medium and long term health and social care solutions to the people of the Seacroft and East Leeds community.
The entire Chocolate Works site won a ‘Game Changer Award’ for lead developer, Henry Boot Developments, at the recent 2016 Yorkshire Property Awards.
Other developments are either on site or planned for Beverley, Ilkley and Harrogate.
